Why You Should Begin Reading Books.
Reading a book is like slowing down time, and at such moments, you also gather information and ideas from it.
Reading a book as a hobby is different; it is more necessary. I remember I read my first ever book (For One More Day by Mitch Albom). I promised myself that if I didn’t like this book, I’d never read another one again. Well, now I have a bunch of them.
It is then said, in quote, that
“Sleep is good, he said, and books are better.” — George R. R. Martin
Well, the catch here is that you read books in your spare time or when you feel bored. Though you read in your free time, in those short moments, you will feel productive.
“It is books that are the key to the wide world; if you can’t do anything else, read all that you can.” — Jane Hamilton
She has a point. Besides, in the first place, books’ motive is to inform us. You just have to find the right one.
“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.”― Dr. Seuss
If you haven’t read a book, you have been missing out. It is amazing how a book can influence people. And bring out the information that you need in the book.
The book has a lot of facts and opinions in it because it has been passed through many hands and been critiqued by many people before it was published. The book gives a different vibe. Reading in such short moments will make the person feel like they have accomplished a lot. In short, you’ll be a different version of yourself.
Productive? In reading books, Yes!
Commonly, we gather information from the web or internet, which gives us the information we need in a span of seconds. However, in books, it is otherwise. It is not different in the way we can get fast information; it is different because of the nature of the information itself.
In a book, there are a lot of words, which means there is a lot of information. Most likely, the one you’re trying to find is there. And not only that, it explains to you and shows you supporting details, which make the idea or the information you’re going to get there rich.
In other words, the book is reliable on its own.
Books have their own writing style.
It still depends on the book you get, but most of the 150+ pages of books tend to give a lot of ideas. In books with that number of pages, specifically when it has 50'000+ words, it is inevitable to have a lot of content and ideas to keep the discussion going.
It is mentioned that there are a lot of ideas in 50'000+ words in a book. How does a writer write that much? Books like this require a lot of research and skill to gather this much information. Therefore, because of the amount of discussion, you can get fresh and new ideas.
Reading can be very useful.
- As a student. They will have to deal with theses, essays, and practical recitations. Through books, the students will see how books were layered out, meaning and how they were written and edited. I am also a student, and there are moments when I need information, but not all of them are on the internet. I had to gather books and use them as a reference, and the information I needed is there.
- As a teacher. They’ll get ideas on how they can present their thoughts or their learning to students in an understandable way. In this matter, the teachers will see why such a book is interesting and understandable.
- As an author or writer. If a writer wants to get better at writing, they have to keep reading. A writer will naturally have bigger instincts about whether the book or the information they have written is enough.
- In general, There will be more important information on how books can help a specific person.
Where is the best place for me to read?
You don’t have to be in a library. Your home is good enough. Whenever you include reading in a different place aside from the library, it will give you a different experience. Assume, for example, that a
- In a Coffee Shop — It is enjoyable to read while observing the people around you living their own lives. Enjoy books and the aroma of freshly brewed coffee while you wait.
- On A Bus — As your bus travels from one location to another, you will see a variety of views.
- While Reading in a Park — It will make you appreciate the environment as you read your book.
- On the train — Read a book before you get to work to at least calm yourself and have your own time.
Books are expensive! What to do?
I read books, and personally, I love reading books. I’m going to be honest; books are damn expensive.
If you get into the book world, there will be a shopping list of a bunch of books you want to get. But there are just a lot of them, and most of them probably won’t follow your budget.
What I do is look for second-hand books. Second hand books, or pre-loved books, are basically used books. People sell their used books because they don’t need them anymore. And as a book lover like me, I recommend buying pre-loved books if you are on a tight budget like me.
Ask your friend. Ask someone who you can borrow a book from. They have got to have a collection where they don’t use it anymore. ()
I also look for downloadable files. such as pdf, which I commonly use. ePub, HTML, etc. It doesn’t have to be downloadable; what’s important is that it be accessible. Need resources? Here are some reliable sites where you can read books…
Where should I read books?
There are a lot of ways you can read a book, and it is all about compatibility.
- Physical Book — In my opinion, this is the best reading experience, where you can feel the pages flipping and smell the book’s own scent.
- eBook — The advantage of having an eBook aside from a physical book is that I find eBooks more efficient than others. Because you can just compile all your books into an app.
- Audiobook — This is the part where it is going to be situational. You can use an audiobook while doing something else.
- Think of it as what makes you comfortable while you read. Do you prefer to have it on screen? or otherwise. Each has its own advantages, and it is up to you how you utilize them.
In what way can it help me?
- It gains knowledge. It will force your brain to think and figure out what the book is telling you.
- It helps enhance your conversational skills. Books widen your vocabulary in a sense that you will remember words or phrases that are applicable to talking to people.
- Author? Books help you to be a better writer. The more you read books, the more you learn about things, which leads to better ideas.
- It plays with your brain; the book tests your imagination. It is somehow similar to number 1. In this one, you have to think about what is happening in the book and understand it.
- It reduces stress. If you have spare time, like you’re on a break from work or school, read a book. Your brain can’t always keep on giving information; it needs to keep on gathering more.
- It will influence you. It will make you a better person. You will see yourself in a different way. Actually, reading a book is another way to escape reality. Your mind deserves a break from time to time, where it is just you and you alone.
- You’ll see and realize how big the world is. You’ll see things or matters in a different way. People talk about their lives in books as they put life tips and advice in
Influential people’s take on books…
“If you read enough, there’s a similarity between things that make it easy, because this thing is like this other thing,” — Bill Gates (Cory S. 2021)
“I loved reading when I was a kid, partly because I was traveling so much, and there were times where I’d be displaced, I’d be the outsider. When I first moved to Indonesia, I’m this big, dark-skinned kid that kind of stood out. And then when I moved back from Indonesia to Hawaii, I had the manners and habits probably of an Indonesian kid.” — Barack Obama (Transcript)
