After a tiring day, you give yourself a bath, and afterwards you take a rest. Sleeping has been part of our routine where it happens once we feel tired or we just feel like it.

According to the article by LiveScience (2009) regarding why we feel sleepy at times, it is said that the longer a person or animal is awake, the stronger the urge to sleep becomes. This is known as “sleep pressure.” That’s because sleep pressure is one of the factors why we feel that particular activity.

Perhaps you may or may not have a compact schedule, but you shouldn’t keep yourself up at night too long, for it may result in further problems. Moreover, it makes it harder for you to wake yourself up the following day.

In this blog, I’m going to show you 3 factors and key points on why you should start giving yourself a good night's sleep.

1. It Increases Your Productivity

In regards to the article from Sclhealth (2018), putting off a good night’s rest could be having an adverse effect at work or school. In fact, sleep has been linked to improved concentration and higher cognitive function, both of which can help you be successful at work.

Basically, this is the natural way to get yourself lively for tomorrow, aside from coffee. On the other hand, speaking of coffee, the more tired you feel, the more likely you are to reach for that afternoon cup. And while that may seem to fix the afternoon crash problem you experienced, the extra caffeine late in the day could set you up for another sleepless night.

2. Sleep Enhances Your Memory

Referring to the article by Hedy Marks (Aug 2021), sleep gives your body time to rest and recharge. It may also be crucial to your brain’s ability to learn and remember. During sleep, while your body rests, your brain is busy processing information from the day and forming memories.

Before your test at school or a presentation at work, I recommend you give yourself a good night’s sleep. Consequently, it helps your brain process information better and reduces your nervousness.

3. Good Sleep Maximizes Your Athletic Performance

If you are a gym person, this is for you — sleep has been shown to enhance athletic performance. In a study on basketball players, longer sleep was shown to significantly improve speed, accuracy, reaction times, and mental well-being. In older women (Atli A., Feb 2020), less sleep duration has also been associated with poor exercise performance and functional limitation.

This also reflects on your work performance and how actively you respond to the tasks that have been assigned to you. Through this, it maximizes your work efficiently because of how your physical body reacts to every action you take.

Sleeping Should Not Be Underestimated

Sleep is a vital, often neglected, component of every person’s overall health and well-being. Sleep is important because it enables the body to repair and be fit and ready for another day. Getting adequate rest may also help prevent excess weight gain, heart disease, and increased illness duration (Jenna F., 2019).

Good sleep leads to a better and more productive tomorrow

Furthermore, sleeping boosts most of your mentality, which you need to do such activities and work on the next day. There may be days where you cannot find your sleep or you don’t feel like sleeping at all. Just give it a moment of time and simply close your eyes.
